Axenstar - Discography

A broken soul on the edge to insanity
Not knowing right from wrong or what is true or false
Making up your own rules of how to live your life
Don't you ever think about anyone else?

Artist: Axenstar
Albums: Perpetual Twilight (2002), Far From Heaven (2003), The Inquisition (2005), The Final Requiem (2006)
Genre: Power Metal
Official Site: http://www.axenstar.com/

Axenstar was founded in 1998 by Swedish guitarist and dancer Peter Johansson aside bassist Magnus Ek. The group plays very good power metal. It's not quite as ballsy as, say, Manowar or Firewind, but it gets the job done. The group underwent a huge line-up change for their final album, with founders Johansson and Ek leaving the band.

Andre Matos - Time To Be Free

Some days I wonder if I could be
Another kind of person, find another truth
I know these words all too well:
By yourself, no one else, never break the spell!

Artist: Andre Matos
Album: Time To Be Free (2007)
Genre: Progressive Power Metal
Official Site: http://www.andrematos.net/

Andre Matos, born September 14, 1971 in São Paulo, Brazil, is probably most well known as the former vocalist for Angra, as well as his work with Shaaman. The driving force behind both bands, Matos is a classically trained pianist, explaining his vast knowledge of music and his incredible compositions in his music. After leaving Angra over arguments with the guitarists concerning the band's management, Matos took the rhythm section and formed Shaaman. He then went solo in 2006 and released Time To Be Free in 2007. Matos is currently dedicated to his solo career.

Hammerfall - Crimson Thunder

We are the voices in the dark
Inside the fire we are the
Eternal Spark that will guide the way

Artist: Hammerfall
Album: Crimson Thunder (2002)
Genre: Power Metal
Official Site: http://www.hammerfall.net/

Hammerfall, the wildly popular Power Metal band from Sweden, formed in 1993 when Oscar Dronjak split from Ceremonial Oath to start his own band. After going through many line-up changes (including members from bands such as In Flames and Dark Tranquility), the group settled on the one that would bring one of their best albums, Crimson Thunder. Hammerfall toured with groups such as DIO in North America and the likes of Iron Maiden, Slayer and Stratovarius in Europe. A music video was also made for the single, Hearts on Fire. This album is definately a Power Metal must-have.

1. Riders on the Storm - (4:36)

Kiko Loureiro - No Gravity

Artist: Kiko Loureiro
Album: No Gravity (2005)
Genre: Power Metal
Official Site: http://www.kikoloureiro.com.br/

Brazilian-born Kiko Loureiro is most famously known for his work as the guitarist for Brazilian Progressive Power Metal group Angra. Although Andre Matos took the rhythm section of Angra with him when he departed from the group to create Shaaman, Kiko Loureiro rebuilt the group and began releasing albums again as Angra. Most people do not know, however, that Loureiro has his own solo albums as well. The guitarists' incredible skill is evident on his two solo albums, both of which are purely instrumental. This is his first solo album, No Gravity. If you're a fan of Angra or Power Metal in general, I suggest you get these albums. Notable tracks include Escaping, La Force de L'âme, and Beautiful Language.

Tracklist:
1. Enfermo - (4:02)
2. Endangered Species - (5:10)
3. Escaping - (5:35)

Rhapsody - The Dark Secret: Live in Canada 2005

So we'll fight against the wind for the glory of the king
To defeat the evil enemies
And we'll ride with our lord for the power and the throne
In the name of holy thunderforce.

Artist: Rhapsody (of Fire)
Album: The Dark Secret - Live in Canada 2005 (2006)
Genre: Power Metal
Official Site: http://www.rhapsodyoffire.com/

Rhapsody (now known as Rhapsody of Fire) is well known throughout the Power Metal world for Luca Turilli's incredible composing skills, as well as the skill of its players (not to mention the sheer amount of cheese in their music). In 2005, they recorded a live album in Canada while on tour for their album Symphony of Enchanted Lands II: The Dark Secret. This is that album. I give you The Dark Secret - Live in Canada 2005.

The DVD is chock full of awesome, but unfortunately, this post is not the DVD - it's just the audio from the CD. It's very good quality, and I know you'll enjoy it.

Ark Storm - No Boundaries, Beginning of the New Legend, and The Everlasting Wheel

One thousand souls of the dead men
Breaking the silence by hatred
There's only one way to crawl out
Holding on to my hope 'til rise from this hell

Artist: Ark Storm
Albums: No Boundaries, Beginning of the New Legend, and The Everlasting Wheel
Genre: Power Metal
Official Site: http://home.att.ne.jp/kiwi/arkstorm/

Ark Storm is yet another Power Metal band from Japan. The group plays a more Neo-Classical style of Power Metal, but still keeps a keyboard player in the group (the same keyboard player, in fact, as Galneryus. Yuhki pulls double keyboard duties for both bands). The guitar solos are great (almost like Yngwie Malmsteen, but without too much wank), the bass player is absolutely amazing (he can pull solos just as well as the guitarist), and the vocals are awesome (except on No Boundaries. Thank Odin he changed his style for the better). It's just plain Power Metal that you can rock out to. Here is their entire discography so far (only three albums!)

Galneryus - One For All - All For One

Flying through the holy sky
Approaching the sea of rage
We can see the land of freedom
It's just a matter of time

Artist: Galneryus
Album: One For All - All For One (2007)
Genre: Power Metal
Official Site: http://www.syu-net.jp/galneryus/top.html

There is already a Galneryus post on this blog, so I'm going to post this new album here, as well as update the old post with this.

One For All - All For One is the 4th and latest release by Japanese Power Metal band Galneryus. While all other albums have been sung in English, One For All - All For One contains three songs with Japanese lyrics. This album is not as awesome as Galneryus's last two releases, but it's still pretty good, so I'd suggest getting it anyways.

Tracklist:
1. Red Horizon - (2:12)
2. New Legend - (5:23)
3. The Night Craver - (5:08)

Elvenking - The Scythe

Seven moons painted the skies
Before I reached for the chosen one
A travel through the starlit horizons
Through the magic's way
On the path that leads us to knowledge,
A light fall of rites

Artist: Elvenking
Album: The Scythe (2007)
Genre: Power Folk Metal
Official Site: www.elvenking.net

Elvenking is not new to the metal community - almost every fan of Power or Folk Metal has heard of Damnagoras's vocals combined with the folky guitar tracks and violins. This brand of Folk-influenced Power Metal is incredible, and with the arrival of this latest album, the group continues on its conquest of the genre. The Scythe is a must-have for any Elvenking fan. Notable tracks include Romance and Wrath, The Scythe, and Death and the Suffering (a play off of the Wintersun song Death and the Healing).

1. The Scythe - (5:37)

Power Quest - Magic Never Dies

Where will I find my heaven?
Can it really be here on Earth?
How can I know what's waiting?
How will I know what's meant for me?

Artist: Power Quest
Album: Magic Never Dies (2005)
Genre: Power Metal
Official Site: http://www.power-quest.co.uk/

Power Quest was formed in 2001 after a few members of the band DragonHeart (later known as the ever-famous Dragonforce) quit DragonHeart and started another band. Sam Totman provided guitars for a little while, but the band members soon found permanence in their roster with Alessio Garavello on vocals and rhythm guitar (who, in my opinion, is much better than ZP Theart). The band provides a more melodic turn than their fellow Brits, with more emphasis on keyboards. Overall, the band may not provide as much energy with solos as Dragonforce, but the overall sound is much better without any ridiculous wankery. For a more refined Dragonforce, Power Quest is your band. This is the band's 3rd release, Magic Never Dies. Notable tracks include Find My Heaven, Galaxies Unknown, and Another World.

Tracklist:
1. Ascension (Intro) - (2:04)
2. Find My Heaven - (4:13)
3. Galaxies Unknown - (5:03)
4. Hold On To Love - (5:02)
5. Diamond Sky - (3:57)

Masterplan - Masterplan

I'll never give up, never give in
Won't stop believing 'cause I'm gonna win
Sing with my soul before I get old
'Cause there may be no tomorrow

Artist: Masterplan
Album: Masterplan
Genre: Power Metal
Official Site: http://www.master-plan.net/

Masterplan is a German Power Metal band that was formed in 2002 by ex-Helloween members Roland Grapow and Uli Kusch. Although vocalist Jørn Lande is no longer with the band (he departed from the group after their second album), his vocals ring true on this album, bringing a powerful voice to the music. The guitarwork is also great, with impressive melodic keyboards in the background. This is Masterplan's first album, Masterplan, released in 2003. Notable tracks include Spirit Never Die and When Loves Comes Close.

Tracklist:
1. Spirit Never Die - (5:26)

Adgar - Más allá del Sol

Artist: Adgar
Album: Más allá del Sol
Genre: Power Metal
Official Site: http://adgar.iespana.es/

Adgar is a very good Spanish Power Metal band. Yes, Spanish - not only are they from Spain, but they also sing entirely in Espanol. They kind of remind me of Dragon Lord, only better, and without the shitty concept album. Good for those Power Metal fans who want a little something different. Anyways, this is Adgar's first album, released in 2004, Más allá del Sol.

Tracklist:
1. Obertura Nórdica (2:11)
2. El Angel Negro (4:35)
3. Acero y Sangre (5:54)

Freedom Call - Stairway to Fairyland

Freedom Call is a Symphonic Power Metal band from Germany. The group formed during an off-period for drummer Dan Zimmermann's main band, Gamma Ray. The group recorded their first album, Stairway to Fairyland, in 1999, and made their official debut in France as a support band for the touring Edguy and Angra. Overall, Freedom Call is Symphonic Power Metal at some of its best - the synth is an integral part, but the lack of a high soprano keeps them seperate from Visions of Atlantis or Nightwish and puts them in the ranks with some of Power Metal's greatest. This is their first album, Stairway to Fairyland.

Angra - Angels Cry

Angra is a Progressive Power Metal group from Brazil. The band is lead by lead singer and composer Andre Matos. The group combines superb guitar/bass/keyboard solos with incredible prog-filled riffs, while Andre Matos's high-flying voice powers on at the peaks of Power Metal vocal ranges. Angels Cry is the band's first release, and was recorded at the home studio of Gamma Ray guitarist Kai Hansen.

Dragon Lord - Through the Time

Dragon Lord is a Power Metal group from Spain. The group combines members of the group Excalibur with a few other members to create a great sound. The vocals are nice and sharp, not too high and not too low and combining male and female vocal talents, so the sound is enjoyable by all. The guitar work is impressive, with great riffs and solos. There's also a bit of sampling. Overall, Dragon Lord is a good group. The group has two albums out, Through the Time and Dive, with Through the Time being the first release. As such, here is Through the Time.
